Om Dorthe Alstrup:
Artist Statement
What interests me are the nuances and subtleties of human relationships. I stage photographs that depict the ways in which individuals interact. What captures my attention are moments of pausing. What happens in-between action and conversation, because of either contemplation or overlapping of events. I investigate connections between the architectural environment and the people who inhabit it. Ways in which space has its effect on the individual, how it reflects the mood and atmosphere for who people are and who they want to be.
Bibliography
Dorthe Alstrup was born and grew up in Denmark. She earned a BA in advertising and editorial photography from Kent Institute of Art and Design in England and an MFA in photography from the Rhode Island School of Design. She has been an Artist in Residence at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada and participated in the Artist in the Marketplace program at the Bronx Museum of the Arts, NYC.
Dorthe has received a number of grants some of which were from: Rhode Island State Council for the Arts (RI), The American-Scandinavian foundation (Denmark), The Danish Contemporary Art Foundation (Denmark), and The Barbara Spohr Award (Canada). She won First Price in Center’s 2008 Singular Image Awards in the color category.
Dorthe has exhibited work in Australia, Denmark, Canada, England, Japan, and the U.S. Some of the U.S. shows were at The Bronx Museum of the Arts (NYC), Photographic Center Northwest(WA), The Griffin Museum of Photography (MA), and Jen Bekman Gallery (NYC).
